Hang onto your Guccis! This month we are joined by Kathie May, former president of the Arizona Costume Institute (ACI). ACI was founded in 1966 to support Phoenix Art Museum's Fashion Department in the acquisition and preservation of garments and accessories of historical and aesthetic significance. It also promotes appreciation of fashion through educational programs and support of the museum's fashion exhibitions, which feature fashion as an art and cultural phenomenon.
Phoenix Art Museum's fashion collection is one of a few collections housed in U.S. art museums, with more than 9,000 fashion items and regular fashion exhibitions in the Kelly Ellman Fashion Galleries. Over the years, fashion exhibitiions have included Generation Paper: The Fast Fashions of the 1960's; Move: The Modern Cut of Geoffrey Beene; The White Shirt According to Me: Gianfranco Ferré; India: Fashion's Muse and most recently, The Power of Pink which complimented Barbie: A Cultural Icon Exhibition.
Kathie May is a Fiesta Bowl emerita and Maricopa Community College professor emerita. She has taught The Art of Storytelling and Communication in Business and Profession. She has lent her leadership skills to Arizona Costume Institute as well as other organizations. Using her skills in organizational development, team building, mentoring, and meeting facilitation bring her joy and fulfillment. We welcome her and the fashion stories she tells.
